I chose teenager, Kevin Breel's Ted Talk on depression because it ties into what I diagnosed Holden Caulfield in J.D Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye. Breel expressed that he suffers from depression, which was the most difficult thing for him to say in his entire life. Unlike Breel, Holden really did not like to express his feelings. Growing up with a mental illness, especially as a child, is difficult, no one knows how you are really feeling because all of the emotions are on the inside, rather than on the outside. It is very hard to come out and say you suffer from mental illnesses, such as depression, you never really know the feedback you will get from it, or how people will treat you, but holding your problems inside is not such a good idea either. Throughout Holden Caulfield's life, he has had people leave him, and he never really had anyone who was actually there for him, so it was harder for him to share his emotions. Depression is something that can be cured with happiness, and towards the end of the novel, Caulfield reunited with his sister, who listened to him, causing Holden to find himself and to grow as a person.
I agree with Kevin Breel's points in his Ted Talk, it takes a lot to go up and actually admit that something is wrong and that there actually is a problem with you. Mental illnesses are very difficult, even deadly, and it occurs in thousands of people worldwide, who do not know how to share their problems like Kevin Breel.
